After 22 years in retail in Whyalla, Rob and Sandra Walker left the saltbush and the red earth for greener pastures. A so called ‘vine’ change and in 1993, settled in McLaren Flat on 50 acres of land on Ingoldby Road. Surrounded by 10 acres of vines and a couple of sheep, they quickly developed a passion for viticulture. With the help of family and friends they planted 4 acres of Shiraz in 1994 and then over the years increased the land under vine until they were managing 25 acres.
In 1999, their daughter Lucie purchased the neighbouring property which was planted with Shiraz vines in 2000. This is now the existing site of the vineyard and winery after Rob and Sandra sold the original property in 2007.
In 2001, Rob and Lucie decided to try their hand at winemaking so attended a winemaking course and produced the first Walker’s Run Shiraz in 2002 which won 1st place in the Australian National Amateur Wine and Beer Show.
Rob, Sandra, Lucie and her husband Andrew now operate Walker’s Run Wines with the help of their children. After being a small personal venture for family and friends for the past 10 years they are now pleased to be able to make this wine available commercially.
